While working at the post office over the last several years, people have been coming in panicking. The DHS has given a few extensions, no guarantees if they will do it again. Please check this out and be ready with a second acceptable form of id prior to the change 10/10/2018.
The Current Status of States / Territories Photo from DHS (Dept of Homeland Security) website The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. It prohibits Federal agencies like the TSA from accepting licenses and ID cards from states that do not meet these standards. Passengers who have ids issued by a state that is compliant or a state that has an approved extension may continue to use their licenses as usual. At this time, all states are compliant or have been issued an extension.
A real-time view of this map is available at www.dhs.gov/real-id. Starting October 2020, passengers possessing ids from states that are not yet compliant with REAL ID, states that received an extension, will be required by TSA to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel. This change impacts adults, but nothing changes for minors. No child under the age of 18 should experience issues boarding. A reminder, a passport is still required for all citizens, regardless of age, for international travel. What if your state isn’t in compliance?
An extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver’s licenses and identification cards at Federal facilities, nuclear power plants, and federally regulated commercial aircraft until October 10, 2018. After this date, you will need another form of REAL ID Act-compliant issued ID, such as a passport, or a passport card. For a full list of the accepted method of identification, visit the TSA Identification page. Secure driver’s licenses and identification documents are a vital component of a holistic national security strategy.
Law enforcement must be able to rely on government-issued identification documents and know that the bearer of such a document is who he or she claims to be. REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the states and the Federal Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, which should inhibit terrorist’s ability to evade detection by using fraudulent id.
